Latrobe City Trust

The Latrobe City Trust, an independent fully registered charitable trust, was established in 1998 with the dual aim of attracting donations and bequests to distribute funds in accordance with the wishes of persons who made such donations and bequests.   The Trust maintains separate financial records and independent bank accounts.

Through the generosity of numerous individuals, families, businesses and organisations, the Latrobe City Trust currently manages the following funds:

  • programs for financial counselling services or support and assistance for families in crisis relating to or arising from gambling activity
  • recreational, cultural, social, educational or other community development activities providing alternatives to gambling

With a kind bequest from the late Mrs Margaret Sarah Elizabeth Williams, the fund was established to be utilised for children and youth welfare programs in the Latrobe Valley. Enquiries welcome.

Independent Student Scholarship Fund

Latrobe City Trust invites applications for the award of the Latrobe City Trust Independent Student Scholarship in Term 3 each year.  The Latrobe City Trust Independent Student Scholarship Fund provides scholarships and educational opportunities to students aged 16 -18 years at the time of application, who reside in Latrobe City and are undertaking their education through independent means.  For the purposes of this scholarship, independent means is defined as 'experiencing self reliance for basic day to day living without the support of a parent or guardian'.

The Latrobe City Trust recognises that independent students require additional financial support to assist them with the continuation of their education.  The Trust offers three scholarships worth $300 in a calendar year.  The scholarships may be spent on purchase of uniforms, text books, and assistance with VET fees, assistance with compulsory subject/material fees or with excursion/camp costs.

Scholarship Applications for 2010 are now invited.

Jean Galbraith Scholarship Fund

The fund sponsored by Rotary was established to commemorate the life and work of the botanist and writer Jean Galbraith, who lived in Tyers most of her life until her death in 1999. Applicants will have completed, with good results, at least one first year of a Victorian University science-orientated degree course, including first year biology, and must be able to establish a link to the Latrobe Valley. The intention of the fund is to support local students to study interests broadly related to the scientific interests of the late Jean Galbraith.

Bert Thompson Memorial Fund

With a kind donation from the family of the late W.A.(Bert) Thompson, a perpetual fund was established to annually distribute funds for certain brass sections of the Latrobe Valley Eisteddfod and to ensure the future of the W.A. Thompson Cup.   The late Bert Thompson made a significant contribution during his life to the Latrobe Community and now thanks to his two daughters and the Latrobe City Trust, Bert's passion for that big band sound will live on.

Edwin James Austin Fund

With a generous bequest from the late Mr Edwin (Ted) James Austin, the funds provide scholarships rewarding academic achievement for the benefit of the male and female dux of year 6 at Commercial Road Primary School.   His kind bequest also provides for the maintenance and upkeep of the Morwell Rose Garden and Airlie Bank Homestead.
